New investigation results, ‘Diagnosis and laparoscopic management of a rudimentary uterine horn in a teenage girl, presenting with haematometra and severe endometriosis: our experience and review of literature,’ are detailed in a study published in Minimally Invasive Therapy & Allied Technologies (see also <http://www.newsrx.com/library/topics/Endometriosis.html> Endometriosis). "A unicornuate uterus is a rare congenital malformation of the female genital tract, which appears in about 1/1000 women and is characterized by significant anatomic variability. "The diagnosis of this anomaly is usually delayed, as it remains asymptomatic until adolescence and its initial symptoms are atypical. We report a case of a teenage girl presenting with dysmenorrhoea,Charm pendant, endometriosis and haematometra secondary to a noncommunicating rudimentary horn. The diagnosis of the anomaly was based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and laparoscopy. The excision of the symptomatic rudimentary horn and the ipsilateral fallopian tube was also performed laparoscopically. A review of the literature follows, focusing mainly on the diagnosis and laparoscopic management of a unicornuate uterus and its complications in adolescence," wrote S.A. Liatsikos and colleagues, Democritus University.
The researchers concluded: "Laparoscopy is an accurate diagnostic tool, which also carries significant advantages in effective surgical management of congenital uterine anomalies, especially in young women."

Scientists discuss in ‘Where the education system and women’s bodies collide: The social and health impact of girls’ experiences of menstruation and schooling in Tanzania’ new findings in menstruation (see also <http://www.newsrx.com/library/topics/Menstruation.html> Menstruation). "The global development community has focused in recent decades on closing the gender gap in education, but has given insufficient attention to the specific needs of pre-and post-pubescent girls as they transition to young womanhood within the educational institution. This study explored the social context of girls’ experiences of menses and schooling in northern Tanzania, with data collection focused on capturing girls’ voiced concerns and recommendations," scientists in the United States report.
"Results indicated that pubescent girls are confronted with numerous challenges to managing menses within the school environment. Many are transitioning through puberty without adequate guidance on puberty and menses management, and pursuing education in environments that lack adequate facilities, supplies, and gender sensitivity," wrote M. Sommer and colleagues, Columbia University.
The researchers concluded: "Girls have pragmatic and realistic recommendations for how to improve school environments, ideas that should be incorporated as effective methods for improving girls’ academic experiences and their healthy transitions to womanhood."

During a 6-year period 128 girls and 75 boys entered the study. In 96% of cases reflux was detected after urinary tract infection. The randomization procedure was successful and resulted in 3 groups matched for relevant factors. Recruitment was slower than anticipated but after patients were entered adherence to the protocol was good. Of the children 93% were followed for the intended 2 years without a treatment arm change. All except 2 patients completed 2-year followup scintigraphy. Recruitment was difficult but a substantial number of children were entered and randomly assigned to 3 groups with similar basic characteristics,Beads necklace," wrote R.Z. The researchers concluded: "Good adherence to the protocol made it possible to address the central study questions."

In 2007, Shane Robert Martin decided to quit art school and join the Marine Corps.
He called from Afghanistan last week and asked his parents to send him some of his old art supplies. He said the stark beauty of the central Asian country had inspired him to draw again.
"The irony is, here you have a kid who was as tough as anything, who was a Reconnaissance Marine, but he could stop for a moment and see the beauty of the people and the land around him, and there’s something so poignant about that," said his aunt, Amanda Brock. "You know, he lost his life in that beauty."
The 23-year-old Marine lance corporal from Spring died during combat operations in Afghanistan’s Helmand province on Thursday. He was assigned to the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, based at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Marine officials said Martin was driving a light armored vehicle on patrol when a roadside bomb exploded and the vehicle flipped. Martin died of head trauma.
"I know he went there with the idea of helping the Afghani people — I know that in my heart — but also to be a good and loyal and helpful Marine to his own team members," said his uncle, Robert Brock.
Martin was born in Durban, South Africa, and moved to the Houston area when he was 12.
He attended Spring’s Klein Collins High School, where he was in the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps.
"He was known at Klein Collins as the one who would stand up for people who were being bullied," said his mother, Debora Wallace. She remembered one of the school administrators pulling her aside during her son’s senior year. "He said, ‘When Shane graduates from high school, what are we going to do?’ He protected so many people at school, the small kids, and the underdogs."
Martin was fiercely protective by nature, but even-tempered and mature beyond his years, said his father, Kevin Wallace.
"He had a demeanor where he would never get angry at another person, no matter what they did to him," Wallace said. "He would just move on and keep it inside."
Martin met his future wife at an architectural graphics class at Klein Collins. The pair became best friends, and she invited him to senior prom because she had an extra ticket. Ten days later, they were officially dating.
"We would finish each other’s sentences, literally," Lauren Martin said by telephone from California, where she lived with her husband. "We always knew what each other was thinking, and we had the same values. My grandmother told me true soulmates would complement each other, and we did."
After graduation from Klein Collins in 2005, Martin attended The Art Institute of Houston before deciding to follow his heart to the Marines. His father, grandfather and uncle had all served,Tiffany earrings, and Martin had always been a military history buff.
"Shane only ever watched the History Channel, or the Military Channel," his mother recalled. "When we were in South Africa, it was black-and-white war movies."
She said her son had a knack for remembering birthdays and anniversaries by connecting them to dates of World War II battles.
"He really and truly would have liked to be a military history professor once his days of serving were done," she said.
Boot camp and a bride
On Leap Day in February 2008, Martin celebrated his graduation from Marine boot camp. A few months later, he proposed to Lauren when she came to visit at Pendleton.
"It was nothing fancy," Lauren said. "We had no money. We were in a hotel room, watching a Dane Cook DVD, and he said, ‘I’ll be right back,’ and tripped over some clothes."
Then he gave her the ring.
"He told me that I was the moment, and that’s why he did it right then,Tiffany bracelets," Lauren said. "That we were just sitting there together and that being there with me was all that he cared about, that I was the moment, and it couldn’t be any better."
Last visit home in April
The couple married on July 4,Tiffany pendants, 2008, in Lauren’s backyard in Spring. In December of the same year, Martin deployed to Iraq for his first combat tour.
He earned his citizenship during that deployment. The naturalization ceremony was held at one of Saddam Hussein’s former palaces.
"He was very, very proud of that," Martin’s uncle said.
Before he deployed to Afghanistan in May, Martin visited Houston for two weeks in April to say goodbye to friends and family, including his brother, Kyle,Tiffany Sets, 21, and sister, Diane, 14. They ate Chinese food and went shopping at the Galleria.
Diane said she was in the process of writing her big brother a three-page letter when her family learned of his death.
"I never finished it," she said. "It was telling him to be safe and everything, so everybody could sleep. And I never got to send the letter."
In addition to his wife, parents, brother and sister, Martin is survived by grandmothers Pamela Martin and Althea Wallace. Funeral arrangements are pending.

This, Martin McDonagh’s first play,tiffany money clips, announced him in 1996 as a theatrical equivalent to The Pogues: English-raised but of Irish heritage, and remaking traditional material into a new creation that blended a strong lineage with contemporary vibrancy and a horse-doctor’s dose of irreverence. A decade and more of familiarity with the strategy has not lessened the effect of The Beauty Queen Of Leenane. The story of selfish, manipulative 70-year-old Mag Folan and Maureen,tiffany bracelets, the 40-year-old daughter she has in effect chained to their rural Galway cottage for 20 years as her carer and who is far from on an even psychological keel herself, is presented with a keen ear for southern Connacht locutions and an imagination that revels infectiously in bad taste. It is as if John Millington Synge had written Psycho.
Director Joe Hill-Gibbins gets maximum mileage out of the sense of claustrophobia of the single cottage-kitchen location,tiffany, with designer Ultz providing a set that, characteristically, is clever but goes a bit too far. We enter the reconfigured auditorium through veils of rain spattering against sheets of polythene, which flank the ceilinged playing area itself; there is even a grassy area that can hardly be seen as folk enter and exit by the cottage’s main door,tiffany cuff Links, but which we get to pass on our own entrances.
The central performances come from a pair of masterly Irish actresses. As Mag, Rosaleen Linehan has a set of features and an expressive skill that allow her to look innocent, pathetic, vindictive and furtive all at once. Susan Lynch has moved on from her sinister-siren early days: she can still evoke the dark heart that underlies so many of her roles, yet can now combine it with a genuine pathos and a sense that Maureen could well merit the title "the beauty queen of Leenane", as she is dubbed by neighbour Pato, whose affection seems to offer her an escape.
McDonagh’s writing and Hill-Gibbins’ staging alike know the value both of charm and shock, of suddenness and exquisite inevitability, whether the last concerns Maureen’s dashed hopes or Mag’s chamber pot emptied into the sink. As well as being delicious in its own right, it makes one impatient for a British premiere of McDonagh’s latest (and first American-set) play, A Behanding In Spokane. () www.youngvic.org
